Grunge

Grunge is a deliberately undone aesthetic built on flannel, worn denim, heavy boots and layers that look unplanned.
What defines it
Plaid flannel, band and washed-out tees, ripped or faded denim, chunky boots, oversized over fitted, and a general refusal to look finished.
What to wear
Layer one thing too many on purpose: flannel over a tee, tee over a long sleeve. Keep the boots heavy and the rest soft. A worn-in piece beats a new one made to look worn.
Where it came from
Came from the Pacific Northwest music scene of the late eighties and early nineties, was sold back as high fashion almost immediately, and returns roughly every decade — the current revival leans more nineties-costume than the original, which was mostly thrift and weather.
What aesthetic am I?

Ribbon and bow details, lace trim, sheer layers, pearl and pink accents, ballet flats, and a deliberate sweetness that is the whole point rather than an accident.
Clean girl
A tight bun or slicked ponytail, gold hoops or a thin chain, neutral and tonal clothes, nothing oversized, and grooming doing the work that print and pattern do elsewhere.
Old money
Navy, camel, cream and forest green. Knitwear, tailored trousers, loafers, collared shirts. No visible branding at all, and fit doing everything.
Y2K
Low-rise or bootcut denim, cropped and baby tees, tinted sunglasses, chunky belts, metallic and frosted finishes, and shoulder bags worn high.
Cottagecore
Prairie and floral dresses, puff sleeves, linen and cotton, hand-knits, muted greens and creams, and practical shoes that look like they walk somewhere.
Streetwear
Hoodies and graphic tees, oversized on top or bottom but rarely both, sneakers treated as the centrepiece, caps, and an eye on what dropped recently.
Dark academia
Blazers and cardigans, pleated skirts and wool trousers, loafers and oxfords, a palette of brown, oxblood, forest and charcoal, and layers that look like they belong in a library.
